ABOUT THE COMPANY

dot.dat.inc is a small woman-owned data processing and data management firm incorporated in California in 1994 by Dot Nelson. Using gINT software, the company provides full-service support to geotechnical, geologic, and environmental professionals in the input, manipulation, and presentation of subsurface investigation data.

WORK PRODUCTS AND SERVICES

Data Input/Output

Dot Nelson does the data processing, transforming "raw" field logs and data from associated lab testing programs into high-quality report-ready figures. Although typical gINT data entry is at a word-processing level, Dot's "logical logs" incorporate technical evaluation during input and revision. She screens first draft logs for consistency with ASTM standards, client-specified descriptive formats, and other basic engineering correlations. Where physical properties are tested, she gINTs the data for QA check of lab calculations and for presentation as report-ready graphic plots and tabular summaries. Boring logs are then revised, as appropriate, to correlate with test results. After requisite client engineering review, logs are finalized for use in reports. Dot has worked her "logical" magic on tens of thousands of logs.

Boring log forms, whether from Dot's library or the client's, are matched to project specs and type of investigation. Common forms:

Lab data from soil or rock testing include: moisture content, dry unit weight, particle size distribution (sieve data), Atterberg Limits, consolidation, unconfined compressive strength, lab compaction, and direct shear. These data may be presented as:

Other Data Management Services

Dot and Rick Nelson collaborate on other data management services offered by dot.dat.inc. These include:

Custom Training

Rick Nelson does individual or group training. He teaches most of the classes sponsored by gINT Software (see Support>Training) using a web-based service. He also does training on specific issues or problems that arise during gINT usage when the client wants to learn how to manage those problems or tasks independently in the future. Common topics addressed using the client's own library are:

EXPERIENCE

Both Dot and Rick have over 15 years of experience working solely with gINT software, almost tracking gINT software's own history from the DOS version to the current v6. They both began working with gINT at Woodward-Clyde Consultants (currently URS Corporation).

About Dot Nelson

Dot began her career as an independent gINT consultant soon after she and Rick completed a data processing and management assignment for the design-phase investigation of Diamond Valley Reservoir Project, an 800,000-acre-foot reservoir impounded by three dams. Within a 10-month period, Dot input 1,500 field logs comprising 80,000 feet of rock core, rotary wash, bucket auger, hollow-stem auger, and test pit logs, and input and incorporated much of the associated laboratory testing; follow-on work comprised 12,500 drilled feet of rock core borings. Her data processing and management experience since 1994 encompasses projects from a single-site telecom tower to water conveyance tunnel design.

About Rick Nelson

Rick is a geotechnical engineer (M.S. from MIT) who has been with URS Corporation and its predecessor firm for 30 years. He currently splits his time among URS, dot.dat.inc, and gINT Software, providing gINT technical support and training for all three firms. His project experience has been almost exclusively in data management on large projects, ranging from the Trans-Alaska Pipeline to investigations at various high-level nuclear waste repository sites to refinery site assessment and remediation efforts.
